About
Connecting residents, businesses, and everyday life in Oranit.
Our Story
It all started in February 2012, under a different name: oranit.biz.
A few of us, residents of Oranit, wanted to make it easier for our neighbors to find each other. Not in the abstract sense, but in the practical, everyday sense: when you need a plumber, a tutor, a graphic designer, or someone to watch the kids on a Friday afternoon, why look outside the community first? Oranit has always prided itself on being close-knit, and yet so often the people who could help you most lived just three streets away, and you had no way of knowing.
So we built a directory. Within a few months, more than 100 local businesses and professionals had joined us. It really worked.
Then, in 2013, one of our founding members faced a serious medical situation, and the rest of us were slowly pulled away by work, by family, by the quiet pull of everyday life. The platform went quiet with us. But the cause never really left. It just moved to the back of the shelf, waiting for the right moment to come back.
The years that followed asked a great deal of Oranit. A pandemic that closed our doors and made every neighbor's well-being suddenly visible. A war that began on October 7th, 2023, and called so many of us into reserve duty, into the security teams that stood watch over our streets, into the quiet, unglamorous work of looking after each other when it mattered most. Families opened their homes. Volunteers organized meals, rides, childcare, equipment drives. The kitat konenut trained, patrolled, and kept watch. People who had never met before became people who depended on one another.
We learned, again, what we already knew: that Oranit is a community in the deepest sense of the word. Not a postal code. Not a row of houses on a hilltop. A community. And a community deserves the tools to know itself, to find itself, to keep what it builds.
That's why we're back. It's 2026, and the work continues, in a new form.
Oranit.biz is reborn as oranit.community, and the name change matters to us. The original mission was an economic one: to keep our resources circulating within the community, to support local businesses, to save each other time and money along the way. That mission is still very much alive. But the community itself has grown over the years, and so has what it needs from us.
Today, so much of Oranit's life happens in fragments, scattered across the places we already gather. A WhatsApp group for the parents at each school. Another for second-hand furniture. One for lost dogs and found cats. A neighborhood Facebook group where someone, every few weeks, asks if anyone knows a good electrician, and a dozen people answer at once with names and phone numbers that scroll away by the next morning.
These groups do real work. They're how we've held things together for years, and we're not trying to replace them. But anyone who's tried to find that electrician's number two months later knows the limits. Important things get buried. Good recommendations vanish into the scroll. Newer residents stand outside the loop entirely, unsure which group to join, who to ask, where the real conversation is happening. The information exists, but it lives in a hundred small islands, and most of us only ever visit a few of them.
Oranit.community is the place where it all comes together. A local business directory you can search whenever you need it. A second-hand marketplace that doesn't disappear at the bottom of a chat. Community events, volunteering opportunities, neighbors helping neighbors, the way it's always worked best here. Everything Oranit, under one roof, and still here next month when you need to find it again.
We are an independent platform, not affiliated with, initiated by, or run by the local council. We are residents, the same people who started this back in 2012, joined now by a wonderful new generation of volunteers. Our work complements the council's; it doesn't replace it. We exist because a community is so much more than its municipal services, and some things are best built by the people who actually live here.
Free for every Oranit resident, professional, and business. Extended business listings are available for those who want a little more visibility, and that's what keeps the lights on, the servers running, and the platform growing for all of us.
Welcome back. And if you're new here, welcome home.
